Countdown to Christmas: Christmas Plus

Countdown to Christmas: Christmas Plus

We've been all about the plus lately (as evidenced in our last tutorial, the Definitely Positive Quilt).

This modern block takes on a Christmas theme with the use of red, green, and white fabric.  We also added a diagonal "X" element with the negative space of the background.  With multiple blocks, you can mix and match color placement to make a fun quilt with lots of interesting secondary designs.  You can find out more about us and our pattern company by visiting our website, The Cloth Parcel.  We also love to connect on FacebookInstagram, and Pinterest!

This quilt block finishes at 6" square.

1 Fat Quarter red fabric {ours is Hazelwood by OneCanoeTwo}
1 Fat Quarter green fabric {ours is Olive's Flower Market by Lella Boutique}
1 Fat Quarter white fabric {ours is Bella Solids white}

Begin by cutting the following pieces:

White

  • (4) 3" squares
  • (4) 1.5" squares

Green

  • (8) 2" squares

Red

  • (2) 1.5" x 2"
  • (1) 1.5" x 4.5"

Place two green squares on each of the 3" white squares, as shown in the photo below.  Sew the green squares onto the white squares, along the diagonal line.  You may find it helpful to draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the green squares to follow, if your machine doesn't have a straight line indicator.  We use washi tape on our machines as a guide to mark the center line.

Once all the green squares are sewn on, trim the extra corners 1/4" away from the seam and press carefully.  This will complete the four corner squares.  Next, sew the white 1.5" squares onto both sides of the red 1.5" x 4.5" piece and to one side of each of the red 1.5" x 2" pieces.

Sew the corner pieces to each side of the short red plus arms to make three rows.

Sew the three rows together and press well.  Your Christmas Plus block is complete!

This quilt block finishes at 6" square.

We hope you've enjoyed our tutorial.  We love this block and can't wait to use it in many other colors and sizes.  Please tag us @theclothparcel on Instagram so we can see your version of our block!  You can also visit us on Facebook or join our quilting circle to quilt along with us.  Happy sewing!
