Summer Sew-alongs
Summer Sew-alongs
I'm pretty sure you don't need any help keeping busy this summer because with or without kids at home, that's the nature of summer. Still, wouldn't it be fun to spend a few days working on a new project, sewing with friends and getting tips along the way? Then I might have a sew-along for you!
First, what is a sew-along? Or quilt-along. Folks use both terms. It's a group of like-minded, "I want to make that" folks who make a project at the same time, offering tips, fabric advice, encouragement and support. And to commiserate that they made the same mistake!
Some are loosely organized, others have very structured schedules. Giveaways and prizes are sometimes included. Mostly it's about the fun of sharing a project and seeing how other ideas, fabric pulls and color schemes come together.
Wait. Fabric pull?
Joanna's "pull" for Crochet. Fabric pull - better known as the "collecting of the fabric to be used in the project." Pulled from your favorite quilt shop, your closet or bins.
Crochet? Joanna Figueroa of Fig Tree has a gorgeous new quilt titled Crochet. Made with 16 - 12" x 12" blocks and sashing, the finished quilt measures 66" x 66". All you need are 1 Crochet pattern by Fig Tree, 16 fat quarters and a background fabric.
While the Crochet sew-along has officially started but it's not too late to get caught up - the wrap-up is on July 26. Here's how to get going - Crocheting:

Butterfly Patch? This is Vanessa Goertzen of Lella Boutique's Butterfly Patch Sampler Quilt.
This also started a few weeks ago but there's still almost a month to go. You'll need the Butterfly Patch by Lella Boutique pattern, 1 Layer Cake and some yardage. The finished quilt measures 66" x 66".
Vanessa also has tips for fabric selection, cutting and piecing.

The Moda Bake Shop just started their new Summer Adventure - At The Seashore. There are a dozen chefs, a couple of different setting options and a slew of beach and ocean-themed blocks.
That's all the Bake Shop has shared so far... that I can show you. <insert winking emoji here.>
The official start was Monday, June 3 and this runs through August 26. Here's what you need to spend your summer At the Seashore:

How about getting a jump on holiday sewing by stitching up a Tree Farm?
This gorgeously scrappy Tree Farming quilt is from Susan Ache's Countdown to Christmas book. To join in, you'll need to get the Countdown to Christmas book and gather all your green scraps and fabrics - the more variety the better. Susan says the best part about this quilt is that there isn't any place where points have to be matched. If a few tips get chopped off... blame that on the birds.
This sew-along hasn't officially started yet, the announcement is coming in another week or so. Find more information on Susan's Instagram - @yardgrl60. (A little birdie told me that there will be giveaways.)
And finally, what's more perfect for a summer sew-along than a Summer Moon?
The sweet folks at It's Sew Emma described this quilt as being "for quilters who love samplers but also crave a touch of whimsy". There are twenty-four blocks and each one is made in three sizes. Blocks are completed with frames and extra pieces.
The first thing you'll need is the Summer Moon book. The background can be one fabric or a mix of low-volume background prints. The prints can be yardage, fat quarters, fat eighths, Layer Cake squares and scraps for a scrappier look
Any guesses as to which way I'm going on that?
I might also be taking a few liberties with one or two of my blocks. (I know... it's shocking!)
The official start for the Summer Moon quilt-along was was Monday, May 27 but there's time to catch-up as this runs through February 27, 2020. For more information:
