How to Make DIY Festive Fabric Holly Leaves
Looking for a fast and fun holiday project? The Moda team has just the thing! Today we’re sharing a fun and festive tutorial for making these charming fabric holly leaves, perfect for seasonal décor, gift wrapping, and handmade ornaments.
Originally a hit as Moda’s Make & Take at the 2024 Fall Quilt Market, this project is quick, easy, and ideal for fabric shop events or an afternoon of crafting with friends. Whether you’re a seasoned quilter or just looking to use up some festive fabric scraps, these holly leaves are sure to bring a smile to your face and holiday spirit to your home.
What You’ll Need
- An assortment of fabric scraps (about 6” x 7”) for the holly leaves
- Some double-sided fusible interfacing to give your leaves a little stability
- An assortment of fabric scraps (about 5” x 5”) for the holly berries
- A 45mm Clover Quick Yo-Yo Maker for the holly berries
- A fabric pen, fabric scissors or snips, coordinating floss or thread, a chenille needle or sewing machine, and fabric glue or hot glue
- Optional: Moda’s exclusive Jolly Holly acrylic template, available from your favorite quilt shop!
- Optional: Ribbon or twine

Inside you’ll find detailed instructions for making two sizes of holly leaves: A smaller set for ornaments, gift tags, and accessories; and a larger set for making oversized garlands and home décor projects!
Using the Moda Jolly Holly acrylic templates makes this project even easier – simply use your favorite fabric marker to trace the leaves and cut them out with scissors. Ask for the acrylic templates at your local quilt shop.
We love how versatile this project is! Choose fabrics and colors to fit your decorating style, whether warm and traditional or bright and modern. For just a few leaves, you might choose to embellish your leaves with hand-stitching, or take a stack of leaves to your machine for a quick finish. Yo-yos make the perfect holly berries for a final touch!
Group a few leaves and berries together and add a ribbon to make ornaments, or join larger leaves end to end to create a festive garland.
For our Moda Wonderland booth at Fall Quilt Market, we grouped oversized leaves and berries together to make a decorative garland around our booth entrance. Using double-sided Peltex gave our leaves extra stability, and we added a little interfacing to the jumbo yo-yos as well.
