December 29: Candlelight Setting

Candelight uses all 25 blocks! This is the perfect setting if you made a good mix of block sizes.

This setting finishes at 64" by 64" and requires: (12) 6″ blocks (12) 12″ blocks (1) 18″ blocks Background fabric: 1 3/4 yards From background fabric:

  • Cut [8] 2" strips. Subcut as follows:
    • [2] 2" by 18 1/2"
    • [2] 2" by 21 1/2"
    • [2] 2" by 33 1/2"
    • [2] 2" by 36 1/2"
  • Cut [8] 2 1/2" strips. Subcut as follows, piecing strips as needed:
    • [2] 2 1/2" by 60 1/2"
    • [2] 2 1/2" by 64 1/2"
  • Cut [1] 6 1/2" strip. Subcut into [12] 3 1/2" by 6 1/2" rectangles for sashing between 6" blocks.
  • Cut [4] 4 1/2" strips. Subcut into [12] 4 1/2" by 12 1/2" rectangles for sashing between 12" blocks.

ASSEMBLY This quilt is constructed similarly to a medallion quilt, working from the center out. Sew a 2" by 18 1/2" strip of background fabric to each side of the 18" block. Sew a 2" by 21 1/2" strip of background fabric to the top and bottom. Construct Six Inch Block Units Take two 6" blocks and three 3 1/2" by 6 1/2" rectangles of background fabric. Sew together, alternating the rectangles and the 6" blocks. Repeat to make a second set. Sew to each side of the 18" block unit. Take four 6" blocks and three 3 1/2" by 6 1/2" rectangles of background fabric. Sew together, alternating the rectangles and the 6" blocks. Repeat to make a second set. Sew to the top and bottom. Using the two 2" by 33 1/2" and two 2" by 36 1/2" strips of background fabric, sew on the next border. Construct Twelve Inch Block Units Take two 12" blocks and three 4 1/2" by 12 1/2" rectangles of background fabric. Sew together, alternating the rectangles and the 12" blocks. Repeat to make a second set. Sew to each side of the quilt. Take four 12" blocks and three 4 1/2" by 12 1/2" rectangles of background fabric. Sew together, alternating the rectangles and the 12" blocks. Repeat to make a second set. Sew to the top and bottom. Sew on the final border using the 2 1/2" by 60 1/2" and 2 1/2" by 64 1/2" strips of background fabric. One 64" square quilt. I hope you had as much fun with this quilt along as I did!
