Block Heads 2 - Block 1

It's here!  Block Heads 2.  And with new faces, we have a slightly different look.

We're still the same... we're just better.  Por quoi?  Because there are a few more of us.

Because I know you're anxious to get sewing - and you're really here for Block 1 - it's Lynne Hagmeier's Stellar Star.  You'll have to go HERE to find the link to the PDF instructions.

You'll also need these Basic Instructionsthey include the techniques used for half-triangle squares, connector corners, needle-turn applique and curved pieces.  The Basic Instructions are available for download here.

Note:  To ensure that the PDF Instructions print the way they should, we recommend that you Save the file to your computer or device first.  Then open the PDF and print from there.  Different browsers, firewalls and wifi security features can affect the printing process.

Now for the Block Heads!  The Original group is still here - Lynne, Betsy, Jo, Jan and Lisa.

For Round 2, each of us has invited a friend to join the fun.  Because I'm the bossiest, and because I had a very long list of quilty-people I wanted to include, I invited two.

Brigitte Heitland of Zen Chic.

Brigitte is one of my favorite people because she’s funny, smart and amazingly generous with what she knows.  About anything and everything.  She is going to be making her quilt using her Modern Backgrounds Paper and More Paper collections, mixed with a lovely palette of Grunge near-solids.  It’s going to be so good.  You can read more with Brigitte on her blog.

I also thought we needed Vanessa Goertzen of Lella Boutique in the Block Heads.

Like Brigitte, Vanessa is nice, funny and smart.  If you kinda maybe sorta need a teeny favor... she'll jump right in and get it done.  For this project, I knew that she'd mix colors and fabrics in a way that is fresh, modern, but with a unique twist.  Vanessa will be sharing her blocks on Instagram - @Lellaboutique.

So these lovely ladies are two of the new Block Heads.  There are five others and I'll be back on Friday with the rest of the new faces, a few blocks and a bit more to share.

Block 1 - Stellar Star - by Michelle Skeene.  Michelle is one of the many quilters working at Moda.

Michelle loves Reproductions and is diving into her stash for Block Heads 2.  The fabrics are from Rachel Remembered and Harriet's Handwork by Betsy Chutchian, and from Baltimore Blues by Barbara Brackman.

As for my Stellar Star Block, I'm diving into my basket-bin of Jen Kingwell fabrics, including Beach Road, Gardenvale, Moving On and Looking Forward.  I'll be mixing those with backgrounds from Brigitte's Paper and More Paper collections.  I have no doubt other things will be added but this is what's in the box to start with.

Please ignore the fuzz on the mat... I was trimming up some pincushions with batting.  It's messy.  These are my pieces... that purple.  I love it but as you'll see below, it might be a little too busy for the placement.  I like the finished block but I might re-make this one at some point.

The good news is that it's a great block to piece.

Two things to mention - the long seam between the two half-hexie-ish shapes was pressed open.  It simply laid better for me.  I also pressed the seams on the nine-patches open - not something I usually do.  But it made the seam-joins on the sides so much better.  (I promise to include a picture of the wrong side of my block the next time.)

So that's it for Block 1 - Stellar Star.  Be sure to visit Lynne to get the instructions.

Facebook - the Moda Blockheads Facebook Group is the same group as before.  The Block Heads will be joining in frequently, and a few of them are regulars.  If you don't already know Tammy Vonderschmitt, she'll be keeping everybody in line.  She's also great with piecing tips so if you have a question - she probably knows the best way to solve the problem.

So Happy Block Head Wednesday!
