Block Heads 2 - Block 2

Well.  That was unexpected.

While our technical difficulties weren't quite as devastating as an erupting volcano, they were definitely a disruption in our normal flow.

(The image is of Mt. Mayon in the Phillippines.  It was taken by Earl Recamunda of the AP.  You can find the photo on National Geographic News.)

While we're not sure what caused all the problems, we do know that many of you were frustrated, inconvenienced and you were kept from sewing blocks!  We are very sorry for that and we've got fingers crossed that everything is now working.

A couple of things to let you know:

  • If a block link doesn't work, clear your Browsing history.  Then close the browser window completely .  Then re-open it.  Find the website-page-link and try again.  That has been doing the trick for most everyone.  (Fingers crossed.)
  • Moda Block Heads Facebook Group.  If you are a Member of the group, the instructions for the new Block is posted in the morning, shortly after the blog posts go up.  The Instructions can be found in the Group Files and you must be a member to see the Files - https://www.facebook.com/groups/253867175058745/files/

Block Heads 2 - Basic Instructions

Block Heads 2 - Block 2 is Buckeye Beauty and it is from Barbara Groves and Mary Jacobson of Me & My Sister Designs.

The instructions for BH2 - Block 2 can be found on Me & My Sister Designs blog.

There were a few comments after Block 1, expectations that the blocks would be a little bit more "challenging".  Because of the style of this quilt, we knew that we needed a few "easier" blocks.  Trust me when I say that you'll miss these "easier" blocks soon.  And later.  (But it will all be worth it.)

This is what I made for Block 2.  As you can see... I just couldn't help myself with the second block.  The fabrics are primarily from the Looking Forward Lollies by Jen Kingwell with some Flower Mill, Christmas Figs, More Paper and Catnip mixed in.

I promised last week that I would share how I pressed the block so this is a perfect time to use - or practice - the popping/spinning/twirling/opening the seam technique.

It's one of my favorite techniques as it serves two important purposes.  First, it means I can sew blocks like this together without sashing and the seams will always abut.  Best. Reason. Ever.  It also gives the four-patches and blocks a nice flat center.  It doesn't matter if the seams are clockwise or counter-clockwise so long as they're all going to same direction.

If you haven't yet visited everyone, here are the Block Heads for Round 2:
