Mix and Mingle Quilt
Mix and Mingle Quilt
Hi ya!
I am super excited to be part of the Moda Bake Shop family. I'm Richy of SpazzyCat Designs and hopefully you know me from Instagram under the name RichyJr16 and for those of you that don't I have been quilting since I was 13 years old. Mixing and Matching Moda collections is honestly my favorite thing to do. I also love to needle turn applique and piece with small itty bitty pieces. Don't worry I kept the pieces large for this Mix & Mingle quilt but I will warn you... There are appliqued circles. And before you freak they are large and can be machine or hand appliqued. Without further ado, I present Mix & Mingle. This twin size quilt is made of 4 charm packs and yardage. I chose to mix BasicGrey's Saturday Morning with One Canoe Two's Hazelwood for the charm packs. I also added Zen Chic's Modern Backgrounds Luster for the background and accent. All three collections play beautifully together. Enjoy-

Charms
Now before we cut into the Charms let's separate them.
First pull 16 of your darkest charms for the setting circles. 3 1/2" circles (save for later)
Next make 12 piles of 5 charms in matching colors for the stars.
From each pile save 1 for the block circles. 3 1/2" circle is used.
Stack the other four and cut 1 large triangle, 1 small right and left triangles
Lastly pick 36 colored charms and cut 4 - 2 1/2" squares from each for the chain.
Making the Chains-
Stitch together 48 chain units like photo above.
Stitch 48 - 2 1/2"X4 1/2" backgrounds to 2 1/2" colored squares.
Stitch 48 - 2 1/2" backgrounds squares to 2 1/2" colored squares to 2 1/2" backgrounds squares.
Stitch 48 - 2 1/2" colored squares to 2 1/2"X4 1/2" backgrounds.
Press to the colored squares.
Stitch those three rows together.
Add a 1 1/2" x 6 1/2" background strip to one side of the chain unit (repeat for the other 47)
Stitch a 1 1/2" accent square to another to 1 1/2" x 6 1/2" background strip. Stitch this unit to the chain unit so the squares align.
The completed Chain Unit should measure 7 1/2" unfinished.
Making the Star Points-
Make your Star Points in sets of four (one set per block) 12 sets total.
Stitch a left and a right small colored triangle to each side of the large background triangle.
Repeat using a large colored triangle and right and left small accent triangles.
Stitch the two sections together so you have a colored "V". Star Points unit measures 4" x 7 1/2" unfinished.
Piece row one with 1 Chain Unit, a Star Point, and another Chain Unit.
Row two is made with a Star Point, a 4" accent square, and another Star Point.
Row three is the same as row one. Refer to the above photo for placement.
Stitch the rows together referring to the photo below.
The completed pieced block measures 18" unfinished.
Make 12 total
Appliqueing the circles-
Using your favorite method applique the reserved circle to the center of you stars.
Make 12 blocks
Making the border units-
Make border units by stitching a 1 1/2" X 18" (sea foam people) strip in between a 4" X 18" (white) strip and 1 1/4" X 18" (white) strip
Make 14 of them.
Putting it all together-
Now that all the units are made let's assemble the rows.
The top row is made with two 5 3/4" background squares, three border units, and two 3" x 5 3/4" background rectangles. Repeat for the bottom row.
The block rows are made with two border units, three blocks and two 3" x 18" background rectangles. Repeat for a total of 4 block rows.
The sashing rows are made with two 3" x 5 3/4" background rectangles, three 3" x 18" background rectangles, and two 3" background squares. Repeat for 3 sashing rows.
Stitch your rows together starting with the top row and then add the block and sashing rows. Repeating every other one. Finish with the bottom row. Now that you have one top lets add the dark 3 1/2" circles to the chains ends and intersections. See below.
Quilt, Bind, and Label as desired.
When setting your wide binding use a 1/2" seam allowance.
This quilt finishes at 66 1/2" x 86 1/2".
I do hope you enjoy making Mix & Mingle. I would love to see pictures on Instagram using #spazzycatdesigns and #mixandminglequilt.
