Hello, it's Mary Andra Holmes with my second block design.  While looking at the night sky, it's exciting to catch a glimpse of a shooting star. My block Lightning Star reminds me of a rare sight of shooting stars.

This blocks finishes at 12" and or 18" finished.  Unfinished 12 1/2" or 18 1/2 ".

Fabric 18" Block 12" Block
 White A -  (8) 4 1/8" x 4 1/8" C, D - (8) of each 18" size template A- Cut (8) 2 7/8" x 2 7/8" C, D - (8) of each size 12" template
Dark Red  A - cut (5) 4 1/8" x 4 1/8"  A - (5) 2 7/7" x 2 7/8"
Red  A - (4) 4 1/8" x 4 1/8 B, D - (8) of each 18" size template A - (4) 2 7/8" x 2 7/8" B, D - (8) of each 12" template

Make templates, using cardboard or plastic of pattern pieces B,C and D,E in the size block you are making.  Either 18" or 12" ACTUAL TEMPLATES WILL PRINT SEPARATELY. Assembling B,C and D,E blocks

18" block - Stitch one B & one C together and one D & one E together as shown above. Each group should now measure 2 3/8" x 4 1/8". Make a total of (8) of these groups.

Stitch (2) B/C groups together. Test your seam allowance. This group should measure 4 1/8" x 4 1/8".  If not make adjustment now.  Make (4) of each group. Repeat for group D/E. 12" block. Stitch groups as stated above. B/C and D/E stitched together should measure 1 3/4" x 2 7/8". Two stitched together should be trimmed to measure 2 7/8" x 2 7/8". If not make adjustments now. Repeat for D/E as stated above.                  NOTE: IMPORTANT: Seam allowance will need to be sewn a SCANT 1/4" for the 12" block ONLY.  Test your measurement by stitching one row together, iron seams open, then measure to see if you have a measurement of 12 1/2". Do the same for the 18" block using a 1/4" seam allowance.  If not, make adjustments nor before butting all the rows together.  Stitch rows together first. Then stitch each row together to complete finished block. At this time 12" block should measure 12 1/2" and 18" block should measure 18 1/2". Assemble all the blocks per diagram below. Stitching rows together first A-D-A-B-A, B-A-A-A-D, etc. Then stitch rows together. Row 1 to row 2 to row 3,  etc. Block should now measure 12 1/2" or 18 1/2"   Wishing all the happiest of holidays. Hoping you get to see a shoot star soon. Mary Andra Holmes (MahQuilter, Sistersquiltingtrunk.blogspot.com)
